Robinson wins Andrew praise
Robinson was in charge of Bath

Newcastle chief Rob Andrew says Andy Robinson is the man to solve England's perennial club-v-country row.

Sir Clive Woodward cited the awkward relationship between clubs and the national team as one reason for stepping down as coach last week.

But Andrew says ex-Bath boss Robinson can succeed where Woodward failed.

"Andy knows the pressures we're under and has a much better understanding of how you have to work together," Andrew told BBC Radio Newcastle.

Andrew said Woodward failed to get to grips with what went on at club level because he was never head coach of a Premiership side.

"Clive never wanted to understand and never really did understand because he was never in charge of a club," said the former England fly-half.

To add insult to injury, Andrew added that he felt Woodward never wanted to get to grips with life on the "club side of the fence".

Robinson was handed temporary charge of the England team following Woodward's shock decision to quit last week.

And he is the front runner to get the job on a permanent basis, according to English rugby chief Francis Baron.

Whether Robinson becomes Woodward's successor will probably depend on England's performances in the home Tests against Canada, South Africa and Australia in November.

Robinson will also present his case to a five-man panel that includes former England captains John Spencer, Fran Cotton and Bill Beaumont, RFU performance director Chris Spice and ex-England centre Simon Halliday.
