Standing the test of time
By Robert Jones
Former Wales captain

Wales lock Gareth Llewellyn
Llewellyn, 35, is still prepared to put his body on the line for Wales
Gareth Llewellyn will deserve all the plaudits he receives when he wins his 87th cap on Saturday to become the joint Wales cap record holder with Neil Jenkins.

His durability and dedication to Welsh rugby mark him out as a very special kind of player.

I was Wales captain back in 1989 when he won his first cap as a 20-year-old against the All Blacks in Cardiff.

He had performed well against the tourists for Neath and so he got his chance to wear the Wales jersey - and he hasn't looked back since.

But when you consider how many times he's been left out of the side - particularly under Graham Henry's reign when he was ignored - it's remarkable he is about to equal Jenkins' record.

After performing week-in-week-out at club level for over 15 years it's a testimony to his professionalism that he can still command a place for Wales.

It just shows the quality of the man.

Saturday will also be an emotional day for coach Steve Hansen as he takes charge for the last time.

Overall, I believe Hansen can be proud of his time with Wales.

He was criticised early on and we were all concerned he spoke too much about performance rather than concentrating on results.

But I think the performances in the latter stages of the World Cup showed exactly where he was looking to go.

It was the old Wales in terms of flair and skill - and that style has been taken into this season's Six Nations.

He'll be leaving a Wales team which is full of confidence. The level of self-belief among the players has not been as high in a long time.

We've got a team that can compete with the best in the world and perhaps more importantly, the supporters now feel we have a future a the top end of the game.

Hopefully it won't be too long before we clinch a Six Nations title followed by the ultimate prize of a World Cup.
