Garvey inspires Gloucester
Marcel Garvey on his way to his opening try
Gloucester overwhelmed Bristol with six high-class tries
Gloucester 45-18 Bristol

Gloucester went top of the Zurich Premiership with a West country derby win sparked by a hat-trick of tries from teenage wing Marcel Garvey.

The Cherry and Whites elected to leave last season's sensation, James Simpson-Daniel, on the bench for the visit of Bristol.

And Garvey took fewer than 20 minutes to show why coach Nigel Melville could afford to rest his main strike weapon.

  Match facts
Gloucester 45
Tries: Garvey (3), Boer, Paramor, Mercier
Con: Mercier (3)
Pens: Mercier (3)
Bristol 18
Try: Daniel, Archer
Con: Contepomi
Pens: Contepomi (2)

With his team trailing 10-0, the England Under-19 cap scored an early contender for try of the season to spark a Gloucester revival that brought them a handsome, six-try victory.

Bristol played their part in an entertaining contest but suffered visibly for the loss of All Black centre Daryl Gibson just 19 minutes into his debut.

Prior to Gibson's departure, the Shoguns had held the upper hand, with wing Brendon Daniel capitalising on four missed tackles to score the game's first try.

Felipe Contepomi converted and then added a penalty to extend the lead to 10-0.

But Gloucester burst spectacularly into life with Garvey's try after 18 minutes.

The 19-year-old jinked infield before finding a half-gap and accelerating to the line, leaving half the Bristol team gasping in his slipstream.

Five minutes before the break, Garvey grabbed his second, although this time he owed more to luck - and Junior Paramore - than his own fancy footwork and searing pace.

Paramore took out two defenders on the touchline and slipped a scoring inside pass to Garvey, whose apparent fumble as he touched down went unseen by the officials.

Eight more points from Ludovic Mercier's boot saw Gloucester lead 18-13 at the break, and they started the second half at pace to open up a winning lead.

Mercier's third penalty and Jake Boer's try from an irresistible forward drive put them 26-13 ahead after 50 minutes.

And although Garath Archer crashed over on the hour, Gloucester then produced another gem of a try to reassert their authority.

Openside James Forrester started the move with a break from inside his own 22.

Henry Paul and Thinus Delport took play deep into Bristol territory before Paramore pounced from Delport's pass to power over on the left.

Gloucester finished in style with two tries in the final minutes, Mercier's touchdown following another spectacular Garvey score.

The winger completed his hat-trick from long-range, dummying two men down the right touchline and collecting his own chip over Shane Drahm.
