Hull 20-30 Wigan
Trent Barrett
Barrett broke his duck in Wigan colours with two tries

Hull: (2) 20
Tries: Maiava, Manu, Horne
Goals: Tickle (4)

Wigan: (12) 30
Tries: Barrett (2), Richards (2), Ashton
Goals: Richards (4)

Two tries apiece by Trent Barrett and Pat Richards helped Wigan to an impressive Super League win at Hull.

Danny Tickle's goal put Hull ahead but tries in quick succession by Barrett and Richards put the visitors on top.

Each player grabbed a second after Hutch Maiava had pulled one back for Hull, before Chris Ashton touched down under the posts.

Willie Manu and Richard Horne scored late on for Hull as Wigan took their foot off the gas but it was too late.

After Tickle's goal Hull should have gone further ahead but Thomas Lee dropped the ball to end a superb counter-attack set by Shaun Briscoe.

A poor Thomas Leuluai pass cost Richards a great chance before Barrett went over on the right and Richards touched down on the left after a slick passing move.

Maiava blasted through two challenges to score for Hull, only for Barrett to set up and finish off a scoring move through O'Loughlin's incisive breakaway, before supplying the kick for Richards' second.

Ashton, booed all night by the Hull fans, looked to have put Wigan out of reach as he touched down under the posts.

But Manu and an interception try by Horne ensured a slightly nervy finish for the visitors.

  • Hull coach Peter Sharp:
  • "Particularly after last week, it's very disappointing. A pile of rubbish to tell you the truth.

"There's a few reasons, that I'm not going to say, there are always reasons.

"In terms of attitude we weren't good, we didn't have a lot of punch or direction with the football. That's indicative of us this year."

  • Wigan coach Brian Noble on Trent Barrett:
  • "Trent's had touches in most games when he's been playing and he's a good bloke as well as a good player, and he's going to be big for our team.

"We knew they were going to be fiery at home and talked about matching them for enthusiasm, which we did.

"The team's been growing. We saw more fluidity from us with the ball."
