Good riddance
Bradford and New Zealand star Robbie Paul
By Robbie Paul
Bradford Bulls & New Zealand

To be honest, I'm happy to put this season behind me.

It's probably the worst season I've had since I moved to England.

The main reason for that is that I didn't have a pre-season. The time I should have spent getting in peak condition was wasted as I nursed the bone graft I had on my broken arm.

I'm getting to the back end of my career now and I can't do much more jumping around from position to position
And no sooner did I regain my fitness from that injury than I damaged my ankle playing for New Zealand in the Anzac Test.

That set me back for the majority of the season. I played on, but my ankle didn't feel right until the last two or three weeks of the regular season which coincided with me finding something like my top form for the first time.

But all things told, it was a very frustrating time for me and I'm glad to draw a line under it.

I've got the opportunity to put in a full pre-season and I can't wait to get stuck in to a really hard training programme.

It's been more than two years since I had a proper pre-season so I really have the hunger to push myself as far as I can.

For the next couple of weeks though I'm basically going to put my feet up and try not to do anything at all. I might push the boat out and take my missus away for a couple of nights in Paris, but that's about it.

Then I'll start to get back down the gym and gradually work my way back into the swing of things.

Pre-season for me officially starts in early January but I get bored very easily so I normally go back earlier.

I expect I'll go back in a couple of weeks and do a bit of light training just to keep the old body ticking over.

Since the end of the season, I've had a bit of a chat with Brian Noble about my goals for the upcoming season

Nobby's had probably the longest season out of anyone in the game with the dual responsibilities of Bradford and Great Britain, so he's taking a well-earned break somewhere sunny now.

But we'll have to sit down again and deal with the issues - mainly about where I'm going to play - at length.

I'm getting to the back end of my career now and I can't do too much more jumping around the positions from year to year.

I'm a natural stand-off but I haven't played that position in years!

I played half-back, then moved to full-back and then last year I was a hooker, so I really want some consistency to be able to play and stay in one position.

But wherever I play, I can't wait to start the season fully fit. Roll on Super League X!
