2009 winner Mon Mome will carry 7lb more than last year |
Willie Mullins-trained Irish Invader, Beroni and Jayo are among 13 horses to withdraw from the 2010 Grand National after the first of two forfeit stages. One Cool Cookie, Parsons Legacy and Royal County Star will also not run, while Champion trainer Paul Nicholls has five entries remaining. Albertas Run, Madison Du Berlais and Notre Pere are joint top-weights of 98 horses left, having accepted 11st 10lb. The second and final date for scratchings is 23 March. Last year's winner Mon Mome will carry 11st 7lb, an increase of 7lb on how much he carried for his 100-1 triumph. Other previous National winners among the provisional entries are Pipe's 2008 victor Comply Or Die, carrying 11st 5lb, and 2007 champion Silver Birch on 10st 5lb. | 606: DEBATE |
Nicholls has yet to win the National, one of the few major races not on his CV, but will have high hopes for Tricky Trickster. The ante-post favourite just pipped Bob Buckler's Niche Market to victory in last month's Aon Chase in Newbury, and both have been allotted 11st 4lb for the Aintree race. Mouse Morris was unhappy with the initial weight allotted to War Of Attrition (11st 1lb) but has left his charge in the contest at this stage. "He's heading for the World Hurdle at Cheltenham and we'll just take it day by day with him," said Morris. Ellerslie George has been in fine form since joining Nick Mitchell and the trainer is pleased to report his charge bang on course for Aintree. "He's fine after his last run when we were forced to go to Ascot with him," said Mitchell. "The ground was far too soft - he doesn't like soft ground. He had a bit of a broken preparation with cancellations and a foot problem, which is absolutely fine now, so we took him there to get a run into him. He had a good blow and has come on. "If it remains dry, we are hoping to go to Newbury on Saturday. If not, we might have to go straight to Aintree but it all depends on the weather and the ground." The National is the only race in which weights are decided at the discretion of the British Horseracing Authority's Head of Handicapping. This year's spectacle over the four-mile, four-furlong course at Aintree will have a record £925,000 prize fund.
