Day three means Ladies' Day at Royal Ascot

Yeats ridden by Kieren Fallon won the the Ascot Gold Cup by four lengths ahead of Reefscape and pre-race favourite Distinction.

Fallon decided to go for home two furlongs out on the Aidan O'Brien-trained horse and was never in any danger of being caught.

It was O'Brien's first Gold Cup win and the furthest Yeats had ever raced.

Dutch Art, ridden by Alan Munro and trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam, won the opening race, the Norfolk Stakes.

Outsider Mont Etoile, trained by William Haggas, took the Ribblesdale Stakes for part-owner Lester Piggott.

And Jamie Spencer rode his fourth winner of the meeting, guiding Sir Gerard home in the Britannia Stakes - two lengths ahead of Easy Air.

Uhoomagoo (25-1) gave Kevin Ryan and Neil Callan their first Royal Ascot winner in the day's final race, the Buckingham Palace Stakes.

Being Ladies' Day, there was the usual colourful array of fantastic frocks and daring hats on display at the revamped Berkshire racecourse.

For her part, the Queen was resplendent in lime green with a row of pink roses across the brim of her hat.

Uhoomagoo gave Kevin Ryan and Neil Callan their first Royal Ascot winner after getting a dream run up the rails.

The eight-year-old touched off Ian Semple's Appalachian Trial, who ran a stormer from stall 29, with Binanti a length back in third and Bayeux in fourth.

Snoqualmie Boy sprang a 33-1 surprise for David Elsworth and John Egan.

Jeff Smith's colt burst through on the outside and held off Petrovich to win by a half a length.

Hazeymm made most of the running but it was Snoqualmie Boy, third in the Dante and 16th in the Derby, who avoided any trouble in running to take the spoils.

Thirty horses contested the Britannia Stakes but 9-2 favourite Sir Gerard won easily with Jamie Spencer on board. He was two lengths clear of Easy Air, ridden by Frankie Dettori, and the 66-1 shot Upper Hand.

Yeats, a 7-1 shot, ridden by Kieren Fallon and trained by Aidan O'Brien outclassed favourite Distinction to land the Gold Cup by five lengths. Distinction was pipped at the post by Reefscape with Christophe Soumillon on board. High Action was fourth.

Media Puzzle, winner of the 2002 Melbourne Cup, broke down in the final furlong and was later put down because of a serious near-fore leg injury.

Frankie Dettori received a two-day ban (3 and 4 July) after being found to have caused interference through careless riding aboard Guadalajara.

The William Haggas-trained Mont Etoile wins the Ribblesdale Stakes for part-owner Lester Piggott, ahead of 5-2 favourite Scottish Stage and Maroussies Wings in third.

Michael Hills took the 25-1 shot from last to first up the inside rail to foil Kieren Fallon's mount right on the line. A stewards' inquiry confirmed there had been no interference.

Piggott, 70, said: "It was terrific and it was a very exciting race. Coming into the straight he was last but he was travelling very well, he just had to get through."

Dutch Art, ridden by Alan Munro, got Gold Cup day under way with victory in the Norfolk Stakes.

Munro, who rides Sergeant Cecil in the big race, made his move a furlong out, switching wide and running out a comfortable winner.
