Romero's event is being dropped from the 2012 programme |
Olympic cycling champion Rebecca Romero has confirmed she is targeting the time trial event at September's World Road Championships in Melbourne. The 29-year-old has switched from track to road cycling after her individual pursuit event was dropped from the 2012 Olympic programme. Romero also says that taking part in the road time trial at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi is a possibility. "My ideal target is to be successful in the 2012 Olympic time trial," she said. "That's the dream but I'm still in the initial stages of seeing if it's possible. I've got to have a go at some rides." Romero is the only British woman and one of only two women in the world to win summer Olympic medals in two different sports. She won silver in rowing in the quad sculls at the Athens Olympics before winning gold in the 3km individual pursuit at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Romero will ride in this summer's London-Paris 2010 event on 24 June, which she says will be part of her preparations for Melbourne. "It's something to train for and a good marker at the end of June," she added. "The idea is to build up my fitness in events but 100 miles a day in the London to Paris ride is going to be a huge effort."
