Donegal's Christy Toye comes under pressure from Kieran Donaghy |
Donegal scored an injury-time goal to edge out Kerry in the Allianz NFL Division One opener in Ballybofey. Kerry's Tom O'Sullivan was sent-off on 22 minutes for two yellows but the resulting penalty from Colm McFadden was saved by Dairmuid Murphy.
It was 0-3 apiece at the break but Kerry went four ahead after Kieran Donaghy punched into the net.
Donegal fought back and McFadden's late free clipped off Eoin Brosnan's fist before the ball hit the net.
The penalty was awarded after O'Sullivan tripped Kevin McMenamin.
Donegal's first-half points came from McFadden, Paddy McDaid and Ryan Bradley.
The Ulster side had the wind advantage in the second half but they faced a tough task after Donaghy's goal.
The big forward struck on the rebound from close range after a high shot came off the bar.
Donegal forced their way back and levelled after Bradley, Karl Lacey, McFadden and McMenamin points.
Brian Sheehan's 69th minute free looked to have given Kerry the points before the last-gasp drama.
It was a victory for the reigning league champions over the All-Ireland title holders.
