Lewis Hamilton's father, Anthony, is a guest of his son's at Silverstone, his first Grand Prix of the season having finished as Lewis's manager and mentor in March
The sun is up, the crowds are back and the heat is on for a second day at Silverstone with Virgin Racing's Lucas di Grassi making an early start in hopes of bettering his performance in practice on Friday
McLaren decide to abandon their planned 'blown diffuser' upgrade after difficulties on Friday, but Jenson Button finishes final practice well down the field
The McLarens of Hamilton and Button have trouble at Copse and Abbey and Sebastian Vettel is the first to complete a lap inside one minute, 31 seconds but ends practice with the nose of his Red Bull collapsed
Between Vettel's nose, brake smoke at the McLaren garage, Felipe Massa's Ferrari having difficulties, wheel-lock on Jarno Trulli's Lotus and Force India's gearbox problems, the pit crews have it all to do before qualifying starts
The first qualifying session begins and Red Bull technicians make last-minute touches to Vettel's machine as team-mate Mark Webber sets the pace with a lap of 1:30.988, 0.309 seconds ahead of Hamilton
Both Ferraris take to qualifying using the F-duct device and Fernando Alonso sneaks up to third in qualifying as the Red Bulls duke it out while McLaren's problems persist
McLaren are now essentially running the same car as in Valencia, but with an adapted front wing, and Hamilton qualifies for the second round with the fifth-fastest lap, Button in eighth
Red Bull look dominant once again in qualifying at Silverstone with their drivers battling for pole as Vettel is fastest in Q1 only for Webber to take Q2 with a lap of 1:30.114, one place ahead of his team-mate
The shock of the second qualifying round is Button's poor performance in a car he is still not happy with, finishing 14th and not going through to Q3 in his maiden race at Silverstone for McLaren
Compatriot and fellow McLaren driver Hamilton can find something in the car, however, and earns fourth place on the grid on Sunday with a lap of 1:30.556 in Q3, over a second faster than Button's best lap
Alonso, though, is the driver who is really confounding expectations as he gets his Ferrari, yet to make the front row this season and not fancied at Silverstone, up to third place in all three qualifying sessions
With just over a minute to go in the final qualifying session Webber, tied with Vettel at four poles each this season, destroys all previous lap times laid down in the past two days being the first driver to break 1:30
But this only spurs on Vettel who, moments later just as Q3 ends, not only also cracks 1:30 but steals first place from his team-mate by 0.143 seconds with a lap of 1:29.615, his second consecutive pole at Silverstone
