| The Open: Final round ![]() Els had a nightmare at the 16th Final round action from a sunny Muirfield. Ernie Els, Steve Elkington, Stuart Appleby and Thomas Levet will play off for the Claret Jug at Muirfield.
After taking an awful five at the par-three 16th, the birdie at 17 took Els alongside Steve Elkington, Thomas Levet and Stuart Appleby, who are already in the clubhouse at six under. But he could only make four at the 18th, so the Claret Jug is still up for grabs... Hole 18: Ernie Els tees off knowing a three would secure him the Claret Jug, and a par four would force a play-off. He reaches the green in two but as he approaches to a rousing reception, he realises he is still over 25 feet from the pin. His putt is good, but not good enough... he makes four and it's going to be a play-off. Soren Hansen finishes with a bogey five, to end on four under. Hole 17: Els is suddenly under real pressure. His drive at the par-five 17th is a good one, leaving him 225 yards to the pin. He finds the centre of the green with a fine three-iron and he does have a chance for eagle. From 25 feet, he misses the cup to the left, but makes a birdie four. He now rejoins the clubhouse leaders at six under, while playing Soren Hansen also makes four to stay in the hunt at five under. Hole 16: Els misses the green at the par-three 16th. But will it prove costly? It does. His chipped third is on line but runs ten feet past the hole. He eventually takes five, and drops back to five under. Hole 15: Soren Hansen bogeys at 15, which leaves playing partner and leader Ernie Els in an even better position. He joins Thomas Levet and Stuart Appleby as clubhouse leaders on six under. 1723 Thomas Levet completes a superb 66 to join Stuart Appleby as the new clubhouse leaders on six under. 1720 Ernie Els drops a shot at 14 after failing to get up and down from a fairway bunker. There is still much golf to be played before he can call himself Open champion.
1710 Padraig Harrington duly escapes with a bogey at 18, to join Gary Evans as clubhouse leader at five under. 1708 Shigeki Maruyama birdies the 17th to move to five under, and playing partner Steve Elkington follows suit to join the chasing pack at six under. 1705 Padraig Harrington goes for broke with a driver off the 18th tee, but the gamble fails, and he is all sorts of trouble in the rough on the left. But he battles back and has a decent chance of making a bogey five... 1703 Ernie Els produces some magic out of the bunker at 13 to make a vital par. 1700 The 17th provides yet more drama as Frenchman Thomas Levet sinks a monster for an eagle that takes him alongside Harrington at six under. 1655 Ernie Els responds to Padraig Harrington's charge and restores his two-shot advantage. He moves to eight under, three under for the day. 1650 Padraig Harrington sends a long eagle putt perilously close at the 17th. But a birdie four is good enough to take him one closer to Els, and second on his own. 1645 Last year's champion David Duval gets a rousing reception as he walks up the 18th - but he will soon be handing over the Claret Jug. 1635 Ernie Els seems to have stepped up a gear at the right time, and knocks in another birdie at 10 to go two clear. The Claret Jug is in his sights. 1630 Nick Price closes with a par for a three-under 68, and Retief Goosen finishes at four under. Good but not good enough. 1625 Padraig Harrington rattles one in at the 15th and joins the group at five under. 1615 An eagle putt at the 9th just rolls by for Ernie Els - but he duly holes for birdie and regains the lead on his own at six under. 1605 Steve Elkington comes close to the outright lead at the 12th but while playing partner Shigeki Maruyama drops back with a bogey five. 1555 Australian Steve Elkington emerges to join the leaders at five under thanks to a tidy birdie at 11. 1550 American Scott Hoch bogeys the last, which means he ends on four under, so is not in contention for the Claret Jug. 1540 Shigeki Maruyama drops back into the pack at five under with a bogey at 10.
1530 Gary Evans again makes it difficult for himself on the 18th. He drives left, but recovers bravely and holes another cracking putt for a bogey and a final round 65 that gives him the clubhouse lead. 1520 Ernie Els repairs his early bogey with a birdie at the 3rd to move back to five under alongside Shigeki Maruyama. 1510 Suddenly, Gary Evans' round takes a turn for the worse. His ball disappears into the rough and the gallery at the 17th... But he somehow salvages par after being forced to pick up. He celebrates his momentous saving putt in style and make no mistake, Evans is leading on merit. 1502 The group at four under suddenly expands, as Sergio Garcia and Padraig Harrington get going with birdies at the 5th and 8th respectively. 1501 Shigeki Maruyama is on a roll - he makes four at the par-five fifth, and is now second on his own at five under. 1448 Shigeki Maruyama certainly has the touch with his putter, and birdies the 4th to join the group at four under. 1443 Not the best start for Ernie Els, as a wayward tee shot at the 1st finds a bunker. He eventually makes bogey, and drops to four under. 1440 Gary Evans just misses out on a birdie at 15, but with eight already in a fantastic round, he is looking remarkably cool at the top of the leaderboard.
