Once again, Chelsea's pursuit of every player under the sun attracts most of the newspaper attention.

Manchester United look set to be offloading Juan Sebastian Veron to Chelsea for 14m, just two seasons after they shelled out 28.1m for the Argentina midfielder.

"United agree fee for chump Veron," says The Sun, rather unkindly, while the Daily Mail highlights what it sees as a sinister side to the deal with its "Eriksson shadow over bid for Veron" headline.

It suggests that Veron's move shows that Eriksson is already pulling the transfer strings at Stamford Bridge.

Eriksson is apparently keen to link up again with a player he described as "the complete footballer" admired when they were both at Lazio.

It's probably fair to assume that you're not in the manager's plans when he doesn't even give you a squad number.

If the Daily Mirror is to be believed, Steve McManaman need not worry about what impact David Beckham's arrival will have on his place in the side.

Rather he should start looking for another club because Real Madrid will not include him in their declared 24 squad for next season.

And the Daily Express predicts that Madrid are prepared to "turn nasty" if McManaman decides to stay around to pick up his 60,000 a week.

Leeds could be about to break with recent tradition and sign - rather than sell - a player.

The Sun reveals that the club are tracking Brazil midfielder Kleberson and are hoping for a 3m deal.

Away from football, Ernie Els' impressive capture of the Scottish Open title makes him many pundits' choice for this week's British Open.

"Confident Els ready to take bite out of Sandwich," is The Times' verdict (prepare yourself for plenty of sandwich based puns over the next few days).

And The Independent reports that the RFU is likely to make a multi-million pound loss, prompting fears over the viability of professional rugby union.

As the paper puts it, "if England cannot make money because of the huge financial costs of professionalism, who can?"
