Lamb says the financial aspects of an extra game are attractive, as Middlesbrough lost �17m last year.

He said: "It's not all about money but it's not far off when you sit where I do. If we can get �5m out of playing in a foreign country it's a big help.

"I cannot keep going to the chairman with a begging bowl every year."

Speaking at Tuesday's Boro Fans' Forum, Lamb says the money pumped into the club by chairman Steve Gibson is keeping Boro in the Premier League.

"We are very fortunate we have stability in the club and we have Steve Gibson behind us, who is there to pick up the pieces," he added.

"We lost �17m but we retained our Premier League status and that is because of Steve Gibson.

"I have got to consider anything that will bring more money into the football club to allow us to buy the best players that we can afford and who want to come to Middlesbrough."

However Lamb does have some reservations about the proposal, particularly on a football level.

"I can only find one flaw in it and that is the one that has been described as the 'sporting integrity flaw'," he said.

"I find it odd that you can play 39 games and it might mean that one of those games is against a team you have to play three times.

"That is the only reason I can find for not doing it."
