Stubbs left Everton in acrimonious circumstances |
Everton have signed former captain Alan Stubbs from Sunderland on a short-term deal until the end of the season. The return of the 34-year-old is a major surprise after he launched an angry attack on Everton when he failed to secure a new deal in the summer.
However, Stubbs, who will be in the squad for the game against Arsenal, has apologised for his outburst on return.
"I made accusations which I regret due to a basic misunderstanding," he told the club website.
Stubbs was involved in a public row with Everton in the summer after he claimed Everton wanted a clause in his next contract cancelling his deal if he had a relapse of his cancer.
"I now accept that - as the club said at the time - they were fully prepared to remove the clause in question upon my being given the all-clear by a specialist," he added.
"It was a difficult time for me and with the benefit of hindsight I accept that I misinterpreted certain information that had been given to me by the club.

Stubbs is hoping to extend his term at the club, with the current deal due to expire in the summer.
"My target is now a simple one. I want to prove my worth between now and the end of the season in the hope of securing a contractual extension," he said.
Stubbs has made 11 appearances for Sunderland in their desperate struggle for Premiership survival after making 117 appearances during his Everton career.
