Thompson gets Tannadice tribute

Dundee United chairman Eddie Thompson
Thompson believes the future looks bright for United

The East Stand at Tannadice has been renamed after Dundee United chairman Eddie Thompson.

"It's difficult for me to say how it came about because it was done without my knowledge," he told BBC Sport.

"I'm deeply honoured, although I'm not sure I deserve it. Sure, I've invested heavily but, so what, it hasn't really got us anything.

"What I have done is bring in Craig Levein, the best manager Scotland, and lay foundations for the future."

Thompson, who took over the running of the club in 2002, is suffering from terminal cancer.

And the club are yet to win any silverware under his stewardship, having lost out on penalties to Rangers in the CIS Insurance Cup final.

United were also beaten finalists in the Scottish Cup in 2005.

"I might not be around next season but I think the team will be even better," said Thompson.

"I watched with great pride last weekend as we were the better team in the CIS Cup final."

Thompson's son, Stephen, who is the club's chief executive, said: "The last few weeks and months have been an emotional time for Dundee United supporters.

"Both the club and my family received countless messages of goodwill during this period.

"Many of these suggested that we mark my father's contribution to Dundee United in a permanent manner, with the most popular of these being to name a stand in his honour.

"Although my father was reluctant at first, I am delighted that he agreed to this recognition which I know will make him very proud."
