Second Division strugglers Colchester have appointed Phil Parkinson as their manager to succeed Steve Whitton. Parkinson, 35, joined Reading in 1992 and made 425 senior appearances for them.
He has not had any previous managerial experience, but in recent times worked with the Royals' Academy.

Colchester director Peter Powell drew comparisons with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson after Parkinson's appointment.
"There was a time when Sir Alex Ferguson had little managerial experience," he told the club's official website.
"While Phil may not become as successful as the Manchester United manager, we feel that he has the right attributes to take the club forward.
"He has been very highly recommended by the people at Reading, at the Football League and by other individuals within football."
Reading chairman John Madejski wished Parkinson the best of luck in his new job and said the Royals would miss him greatly.
"I am very sad to see Phil Parkinson leave Reading Football Club, but I understand that this opportunity to move into management is something he could not turn down.
"I am sure everyone connected with the club will join me in congratulating him on the appointment and wishing the very best of luck at Colchester United", he told Reading's official website.
Geraint Williams, who had been in charge of first-team affairs since Whitton's departure in late January, is staying on as assistant boss.
