| Marks out of 10 for England after their friendly game against Ukraine at St James' Park. England David James - 7: Spilled Oleg Husyev's shot early on, before recovering to save a low Andrei Shevchenko shot as well as making three other timely interventions during the second half. Gary Neville - 6: A quiet game for one of England's most consistent performers, rarely troubled by the Ukraine attack, but did little in terms of getting forward to support David Beckham. Ledley King - 7: Rarely wasted a pass bringing the ball out, though like Terry had a tough job tracking Shevchenko's superb movement. John Terry - 7: Provided the cross for David Beckham's goal, but early on had some difficulty getting to grips with Shevchenko and looked more solid as the game went on. Ashley Cole - 6: Superb as ever going forward, though less assured defensively, where he was up against the lively Husyev. David Beckham - 9 (STAR MAN):England's captain went some way to putting Euro 2004 behind him - industrious as well as scoring England's opening goal and providing the cross for Owen's header. Nicky Butt - 6: Wasteful with some of his passing and still to recover the form that saw him become one of England's best players during the 2002 World Cup. Steven Gerrard - 8: Deployed on the left the Liverpool midfielder coped manfully with England's graveyard position before he was withdrawn at half-time. Frank Lampard - 7: Became more prominent as Sven-Goran Eriksson rejigged the midfield, his running helping to open up the Ukraine defence. Alan Smith - 6: Gave away the ball twice with his first two touches, before warming to the task. Best effort was a shot that Alexander Shovkovsky parried. Michael Owen - 7: Much too sharp for the Ukraine central defenders, scoring with his first real chance, heading home Beckham's cross. SubstitutesJermain Defoe (replaced Alan Smith, 45 mins) - 6: Fluffed a good chance with only Shovkovsky to beat, though recovered to test the Ukraine goalkeeper with a dipping shot. Kieron Dyer (replaced Steven Gerrard, 45 mins - 5): An uncomfortable 45 minutes for the Newcastle midfielder as he was booed every time he touched the ball. Glen Johnson (replaced Gary Neville, 45 mins) - 7: The Chelsea right-back looked competent defensively and more imaginative going forward than Neville. Shaun Wright-Phillips (replaced Nicky Butt, 53 mins) - 8: The pick of the substitutes, running with the ball from his own half before beating Andrei Rusol and then firing a shot past Shovkovsky Jamie Carragher (replaced Ashley Cole, 60 mins) - 6: England's most versatile defender came on at left-back and as ever rarely put a foot wrong. Jermaine Jenas (replaced Frank Lampard, 75 mins) - 5: Did not have enough time to really make an impact on the game.
