Valencia celebrate their league triumph
Valencia celebrate their league triumph

Valencia clinched the Spanish title when they beat Sevilla 2-0 on Sunday 9 May.

Midfielders Vicente Rodriguez and Ruben Baraja scored to give Valencia an unassailable lead over Real Madrid with two games remaining.

Real lost 3-2 to Mallorca on Saturday - their fourth defeat in their last five league matches - and will now end the season without a trophy.

Third-placed Barcelona saw their 17-match unbeaten run come to an end on Saturday when they lost 1-0 at Celta Vigo.

"The key to winning the title was that when Madrid was so far in front we didn't lose hope," said Valencia's Roberto Ayala.

Valencia could now do a league-cup double as they play Marseille in the Uefa Cup final on 19 May.

Deportivo are also guaranteed a Champions League qualifying spot as they will finish at least fourth.

ITALY

AC Milan have been crowned Italian league champions after beating Roma.

Andriy Shevchenko scored the winner to secure a 1-0 win which kickstarted the celebrations at a packed San Siro.

"We deserved it. This has been a fantastic, unthinkable season," said coach Carlo Ancelotti after seeing his team lose only once in the league.

"Consistency has been the key. We won the big games against our direct rivals. We won the derby with Inter, we won away to Roma, we won at Lazio and at Juventus. That is great consistency."

Despite the defeat, Roma assured themselves of second spot, eventually finishing a massive 11 points behind their rivals.

Juventus secured a Champions League berth with their third-placed finish, in Marcello Lippi's last season as coach.

And Inter Milan notched the crucial fourth spot with a 3-2 win at Empoli on the final day of the season, Adriano bagging a brace.

GERMANY

Werder Bremen lifted the Bundesliga crown after a sensational 3-1 victory over their closest rivals and defending champions Bayern Munich.

The only consolation for Bayern, who have ended the season empty-handed, was that third-placed Stuttgart did not take advantage of their slip-up, losing 2-1 at SV Hamburg.

Felix Magath's side will be kicking themselves as they could have moved to within one point of Munich with victory.

Borussia Dortmund's chances of playing European football in suffered a blow following a surprise 6-2 thumping by struggling Hertha Berlin in the capital.

FRANCE

Olympique Lyon won Ligue 1 on Saturday 15 May despite losing 1-0 at PSG to a Pauleta goal.

That was due to Monaco, who were their nearest challengers, surprisingly losing 4-1 at home to Rennes, with striker Fernando Morientes being stretchered off to cast doubt over his inclusion in the Champions League final.

PSG moved up to second with the win, three points behind Lyon, but with a goal difference inferior by 14 with only one game left to play.

HOLLAND

Ajax clinched their 29th Dutch Championship with a 2-0 victory over NAC Breda with one round to play.

The win gave Ronald Koeman's side 77 points and a six-point lead over second-placed PSV Eindhoven.

PORTUGAL

Porto have already been crowned league champions and booked a place in the Champions League final following their victory over Deportivo La Coruna in the semi-finals.
