Shrewsbury   0 - 2   Darlington

Shrewsbury 0-2 Darlington

Managerless Darlington defied the odds to record only a second away win of the season at play-off hopefuls Shrewsbury.

Tadgh Purcell scrambled in the rebound after his header from Josh Gray's cross was parried to take the bottom club's away goal tally into double figures.

Darlington keeper Shane Redman was not tested until a late drive by Shrewsbury midfielder Kevin McIntyre.

And Mor Diop sidefooted home to seal faltering Shrewsbury's fourth straight defeat three minutes from time.

Paul Simpson's side have now slipped to 11th, now five points off the play-off places with just eight games to go.

Darlo, playing their second game since the sacking of Steve Staunton a week ago, remain in big trouble 16 points adrift of safety.

And they are still short odds to be relegated from the Football League for the second time - 20 years on from coming straight back up as champions on their first visit to the Conference.

Shrewsbury boss Paul Simpson told BBC Radio Shropshire:

"Regardless of who the team is you come up against, if you give them an early lift they'll take it. Going a goal down, everyone got very nervous and didn't deal with the atmosphere inside the ground.

"Instead of keeping our heads we allowed ourselves to panic and rush things. If you want to be successful you can't afford to do that."

"It was a really difficult 90 minutes - and we've got to take it on the chin and do everything we can to make ourselves better."
