Zoltan Gera scored with two excellent second-half headers |
Late goals from Zoltan Gera and Kevin Phillips put West Brom top of the Championship table after a deserved win over promotion rivals Charlton. Chris Iwelumo put Charlton ahead against the run of play with a fine 37th-minute header, but Roman Bednar quickly equalised with a cool finish.
Gera converted Chris Brunt's cross soon after the break before Izale McLeod's shot crept in to bring Charlton level.
Another Gera header put West Brom 3-2 up and Phillips scrambled home late on.
West Brom manager Tony Mowbray on speculation surrounding Zoltan Gera:
"Zoltan is enjoying his football and I think he is happy in his family life. "He is at a club where he's appreciated by players, management and supporters and I hope he sees his future here.
"Zoltan has shown it is not playing too heavily on his mind. He is getting on with his football and enjoying life."
Charlton boss Alan Pardew:
"I thought our back four struggled to cope with West Brom. "I don't like criticising my players but I felt that Chris Powell will feel disappointed he did not do better in the challenges for Gera's two goals.
"You get ups and downs in this division and this is a down but there is still a long, long way to go this season."
