A stunning half-volley from Danny Pugh helped Preston return to winning ways with a fine victory over Plymouth. Pugh opened the scoring when his left-footed strike flew past keeper Luke McCormick in the 12th minute.
Striker Brett Ormerod doubled the home side's lead with a well-taken goal five minutes before half-time.
And Graham Alexander sealed the three points in the 53rd minute when he converted from the penalty spot after Paul McKenna had been brought down.
Preston manager Paul Simpson:
"The partnership between Brett Ormerod and David Nugent worked really well. Brett's
attitude is infectious and it makes others work as well. "Playing games will make him even sharper. We went about it calmly. I think we could have made it easier, but maybe that's taking something away from Plymouth.
"We knew they were going to come and scrap and make it as difficult as
possible. But we did get off to a great start with a wonder goal from Danny
Pugh."
Plymouth manager Ian Holloway:
"I didn't recognise the
Green Army. You can't be an untethered horse. "I haven't gone mad - I'm just a bit disappointed to say the least.
"I want them to smell of what I am about - hard-working, organised, just like
Preston were.
"We can't get away with one or two bad performances."
