The tourists hit back with three late wickets but West Indies closed at a satisfying 287-4 after being sent in. Opener Wavell Hinds was the star of the show on his home ground, notching up his second Test century and sharing in two century partnerships. The left-hander played second fiddle to fellow opener Chris Gayle as the two put on 111 for the first wicket. Gayle notched up his sixth Test 50 just before lunch and reached 1,000 Test runs not long into the afternoon session. However, he was removed when he tried to steer a rising delivery from Zaheer Khan and was caught brilliantly at backward point by Wasim Jaffer. That wicket brought Ramnaresh Sarwan to the wicket and he combined with Wavell Hinds to continue the West Indian dominance. Hinds went on to his century and put on 135 with Sarwan for the second wicket before being dismissed by Harbhajan Singh. Hinds' departure heralded an Indian revival, as Brian Lara was removed after a stay of just seven overs and nine runs. Sarwan was then out for 65 without any more runs being added to the total. Captain Carl Hooper and Shivnarine Chanderpaul were able to guide the West Indies through to 287 for four at the close, forced by bad light three overs early. The five-match series is level at 1-1 after India won the second Test and West Indies the third.
