India chase huge target

Second Test, Ahmedabad, Day Four (stumps): India 17-0 and 291 require 357 more runs to beat England (257 and 407).

India have ended day four on 17 without loss in their second innings, chasing an unlikely 374 to win the second Test against England.

They were given just six overs of batting in the evening after the tourists were dismissed for 257.

But some observers felt England skipper Nasser Hussain had erred by resisting the temptation to declare the second innings early.

Should the home side reach the target, it will be the highest ever successful run-chase in a Test match in India.

Mark Butcher, battling with a fever throughout, just missed out on his fourth Test century when he was out for 92 on the stroke of tea.

Going for quick runs, England then lost a clutch of late wickets to ambitious slogs as spinners Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble reaped the reward.

Harbhajan finished with a five-wicket haul. Kumble took four, and now has 299 in Tests. Michael Vaughan finished on 31 not out.

Craig White was run out for 18 after adding 41 with Yorkshire colleague Vaughan for the sixth wicket. Vaughan was dropped down the order after struggling with an upset stomach.

Butcher had done so much to get England into such a strong position on day four of the exciting second Test.

The Surrey left-hander added 112 for the second wicket with Hussain as the tourists looked to nail home their advantage at the Sardar Patel Stadium.

But then England lost three wickets in the last three overs before tea. Hussain was out for 50, caught at silly point off Harbhajan.

Mark Ramprakash fell for 19 when he top-edged a sweep off Harbhajan - easily caught at short fine leg. Ramprakash had hit two big sixes as England looked to accelerate.

But his dismissal triggered two more wickets just before the interval. Andrew Flintoff made just four before he was bowled off an inside edge by Kumble.

And Butcher provided Harbhajan with his third wicket, as a top-edged cut went straight to VVS Laxman in the gully.

Butcher had played some deft sweeps and cuts in his innings off India's two leading spinners, who did nearly all the bowling on day four.

The tourists lost their first second innings wicket in the fourth over, with Marcus Trescothick, on 12, pulling Javagal Srinath straight to Shiv Sunder Das at mid-wicket.

Hussain struggled to get off the mark. He almost edged Srinath to the wicketkeeper twice and then got lucky when a bat-pad offering went just wide of silly mid-off.

Shortly after lunch, Harbhajan, in a strange over, could have had a hat-trick. First Hussain was badly dropped by Ganguly after skying one to mid-wicket.

Then Butcher almost played on before wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta dropped an edge the next ball.

Giles claimed his best-ever Test figures of five for 67 on the third day as England dismissed India for 291, despite a superb Sachin Tendulkar century.

But even Tendulkar's efforts were not enough to prevent England gaining what could be a decisive lead.

The home side lead the three-match series 1-0 after a 10-wicket win in Mohali.
