White: I rode my luck

It has been a long time coming, but it was a sweet moment for popular Yorkshire all-rounder Craig White when he clenched his fist and kissed his helmet to acknowledge his first Test ton.

White, who was nerveless in the 90s despite having Test newcomer Richard Dawson for company at the other end, ultimately hit 121 with two imperious sixes off Harbhajan Singh.

His driving through the covers was also a delight to watch and one hook shot for four off seamer Tinu Yohannan oozed class.

At times he was lucky, but perhaps after his seven-and-a-half year Test career full of batting failures he deserved some good fortune.

And not even India's knowledgeable crowd could begrudge him his moment in the limelight here on what was otherwise a slow-scoring day.

"We had our ups and downs in the game," White reflected. "I went out there and had a bit of luck, which I thought was important. It was my day today."

The Australian-raised stalwart added: "It was a great day for England. We put 400 on the board and then nipped a couple of their batsmen out."

Against all expectations, England are now on top in this match on a pitch that by all accounts should massively favour the home side.

And White believes Nasser Hussain's team have a chance to put pressure on India. "The game is up to them now. It is exciting," he added.

England started the match 11/1 outsiders to level the three-match series at 1-1, and those odds have now tumbled to 5/1.

A draw already looks the most likely result, although with three days to go much could happen yet.
