William Porterfield made a fine return to Ireland duty as his 81 helped the home side beat Kenya by three wickets in Thursday's one-day international.

The Africans scored 214-9 from their 50 overs with Kennedy Otieno top-scoring with 78 and David Obuya hitting 41.

Kyle McCallan was the pick of the Irish bowlers with figures of 4-30 while Alex Cusack claimed three wickets.

Porterfield hit his 81 from 110 balls with Cusack contributing 30 and John Mooney a quickfire 27 at Clontarf.

The departure of Mooney and Andrew White left the Irish chase in a little bit of trouble on 202-7 in the 47th over but Trent Johnston (nine not out) and McCallan (four not out) guided the home side to a three-wicket win.

Porterfield had returned to captain the Irish after missing last week's drawn Intercontinental Cup clash against the Africans.

And Thursday's innings was an impressive response by the 24-year-old after he had been left out of the Gloucestershire side for Sunday's Friends Provident Trophy semi-final against Sussex.

The victory gave the Irish a 1-0 lead in the series with further games following at Clontarf on Saturday and Sunday.

After the tourists chose to bat first at Clontarf, an opening stand of 80 between Otieno and Obuya laid the foundations for Kenya's total.

But off-spinner McCallan restricted any late charge, and Ireland's reply was always on track.

Opener Porterfield did the hard work, and Ireland batted down the order to finish the job with seven balls to spare - despite 4-33 from seamer Thomas Odoyo.
