Simon Jones exclusive column

By Simon Jones
England fast bowler

That Twenty20 victory over Australia was something special - there was just a feeling of disbelief in our dugout when they crashed to 31-7.

But people shouldn't get giddy.

They are saying Australia are old but they are very good - that's why they are top of the pile in Test cricket - and a Test match is vastly different from Twenty20.

One-day international cricket is different again and that is what we have got to concentrate on for the next month in the NatWest Series and then three more matches against Australia.

What we have seen already, though, is the positive impact our success together over the last two or three years has had on Team England.

It just breeds confidence, and that is what we saw at the Rose Bowl, when we were relentless in our bowling and fielding.

Kevin Pietersen is a really special talent who looks like he has to be a success at the highest level.

When he's batting he has so much time to make his mind up about what he is going to do - he could be looking to go over the top but realise the shot isn't on and do something else instead.

Darren Gough is back bowling around 86, 87mph and I have not seen him as pumped up as he is at the moment.

He really helps out the rest of the bowlers, too. If anybody needs it he will have a chat and all of the boys work closely with him on grips and techniques.

Watching him in the nets, he can bowl yorkers and slower balls at will. He says you have to pretend you are the batter, work out what he wants to do to you and out-think him.

And Jon Lewis did really well on debut. He is a Matthew Hoggard type of bowler who swings it at slower pace and that complements what the rest of us do.

He can bat a bit too, which is why Hampshire used him up the order in our warm-up match at the weekend.

We can use the one-dayers to try and sent the tone before the Tests start, just as we did in that mad Twenty20 win

That didn't last long as he was one of my three wickets in that match but he came in for me on Monday.

I still haven't played a Twenty20 match, although maybe some day I'll be playing in a Twenty20 World Cup the way things are going.

But there is a really strong feeling in the squad; we know there is going to be some rotation over the next nine or 10 games and that our roles might change to suit situations.

We stay in hotels together for most of the one-day series and it's like being on tour - we have some good fun together and have a laugh.

Borrowing someone's phone charger and not giving it back is no laughing matter, though, and I shall be having serious words with Gareth Batty about my flat battery when I get hold of him.

We're in London this week and you can't miss the opportunity so we'll head out shopping for a bit after training and maybe head to the cinema in the evening.

Bangladesh are first up and we know they could be more of a challenge in this form of the game because they have two or three shot-making batsmen who can make a real difference.

In the Tests they tended to sit back and go into their shells but they can afford to go for it a bit more in the one-day game, and they have had a confidence boost in beating Worcestershire last weekend.

Of course, we will try to beat them well because this is a big series for us in the build up to the Ashes Tests.

Five-day cricket is a different animal from a game of 50 overs a side, but cricket can be a mental game.

We can use the one-dayers to try and set the tone before the Tests start, just as we did in that mad Twenty20 win.
