First the Londoner must hope that Nikolay Valuev, the man he beat to win his title last November, will not enforce a rematch clause in their contract.
And secondly, there will be some hard negotiations over where any fight would take place as Haye wants the venue to be London's Wembley Stadium, but the Ukrainian siblings would prefer it to happen in their adopted Germany.
Haye admitted: "Given the option, no I don't want my next fight to be against Valuev. We'll take a few days off and then do some talking.
"It's my duty to make the best possible fights out there."
After putting on a display of power to beat Ruiz, who had only been stopped once before in an 18-year career, Haye is confident he can beat anyone in the division.
And he is already itching to return to the ring to back up his claims.
"I'd like to fight again this year, in October or November. I'd take on the Klitschkos now, no doubt about it," he said.
"I wouldn't have any qualms about fighting anyone. Look at my career to date - I'll fight anybody and go anywhere."
However Haye admitted he can improve, saying his defence was too easily breached by the 38-year-old Ruiz, who still had his own opportunities to inflict damage despite being knocked to the canvas four times.
"My performance wasn't that great," said Haye. "It was entertaining, good for the crowd, but technically it wasn't as good as I'd have liked because I was taking way too many shots.
"The more of these tough fights I have the better I'll become. I'm nowhere near the complete article yet but I'm on the right road."
