... It's down to the business of winning football matches.

Ipswich have managed that just once all season and Paul Lambert pointed out that the team has to change that quickly if they are to get out of their current predicament.

They host Preston on Saturday, still looking for their first victory at home this season.

Can the Scot lead the Portman Road side to safety? Only time will tell.

"We'll have our own style and we'll need to play on the front foot.

"I'm not going to promise anything but hopefully the lads will play the way I want them to.

"We'll try and compete and win every game we play in."

In the meantime, I'll keep across the rest of the Scot's comments as he meets the media for the first time as Ipswich manager.

On the suggestion that he will come in and give the players some "home truths" Lambert again reiterates needing to make the club a fun place to be.

"I think management has evolved and the game has evolved.

"There will be times when you have to tell players it's not good enough, and times when players have to enjoy it."

On whether he will look to sign free agents before the transfer window opens again in January.

"I will have to judge what is here first."

Lambert is asked how he felt when he was first contacted by Ipswich regarding their managerial job.

"If you look at the number of managers out of work, there are thousands out there out of work. I was fortunate that (owner) Marcus Evans wanted to have a chat and we got on well.

"I have standards that I want to try to hit, but I've had some success and some failures. But I don't want to be judged on past success or failures."

Lambert watched on as Ipswich fell to a 3-0 defeat by Millwall on Saturday and has told the players they will have a clean slate with him.

"There's been a few games where the lads haven't got going.

"I told them to forget what's happened in the past, they've got to look to the future now.

"You'll see a different team on Saturday.

"You've got to make the place a happy place to be. They need to come in and enjoy playing the game.

"This is a well-supported football club and we need to get those fans onside."

As a former Norwich manager, is Lambert surprised to be sat in the hotseat at Portman Road?

"Nothing surprises me in football. I'm proud to be here and I can't wait to get going. I have a group of lads that want to do well and a club that wants to do well and big support behind us. My main focus is Ipswich and I'll put everything into it. I've never once not given everything I've got."

Lambert has had some mixed successes in the transfer market and is keen to point out that, though Ipswich may need signings, assuming that just buying new players will change the situation is not always true.

"There's no secret, you just try to win games.

"I think what we have to do is create an atmosphere where we have a lot of fun and make the place upbeat.

"The squad needs some help but money doesn't guarantee you everything. We have to get the right players in here to help.

"The league has got stronger than what it was seven years ago (when he was promoted from the Championship with Norwich)."

Will there be money for Lambert to spend in January?

"When January comes, I'll deal with it. Winning games is more important right now. My job is to get the squad doing different things and playing the way I think they should play. I'm sure we'll have a talk in January-time and hopefully add to the squad in January."

Ipswich are five points adrift of safety at the moment and Lambert is realistic about where the club are.

"We need everybody as I said before.

"We need the team to enjoy playing football again and give it 100%. I'll give it everything I've got.

"There's no great expectancy level on me at the moment.

"We have to win football games. If we can get on a little run then you don't know where it will take you."

Lambert is asked if he had any concerns or reservations about taking the job at Ipswich, given his connections with Norwich.

"There are no concerns. It's seven years ago, I had three fantastic years there. I don't want to hark back - I want to focus on Ipswich now and get this team away from the bottom of the table. I'll be judged from now on in."

Any animosity expected from the fans? "No - I saw the fans on Saturday at Millwall and for a team that's at the bottom of the table they were fantastic. If we win games, they'll get right behind us."

Before the news conference starts Paul Lambert takes a moment to reflect on the tragic events at Leicester City on Saturday.

"I just want to reiterate that my thoughts are with everyone at Leicester, I live up there and went to the ground yesterday.

"I'd also like to wish Glenn Hoddle a speedy recovery."

On his appointment as Ipswich boss he says:

"It feels great to be back.

"I've had a good six months off and then you start to get itchy feet.

"I can't promise anything but I can't wait to get going."

Interestingly for a man about to be officially unveiled as Ipswich Town boss, Paul Lambert's most successful period as manager came at, er, Norwich City.

Lambert had cut his teeth to varying success at Livingston (not great), Wycombe (getting better - historic cup run) and Colchester (improving again), before landing the job at Carrow Road.

His job interview might have been a 7-1 opening day win for the U's against the recently-relegated Canaries in August 2009 and he took over from Bryan Gunn pretty much straight after.

The upturn was remarkable. Two seasons, two promotions and suddenly the Scot was a Premier League boss. Wes Hoolahan developed into a creative genius and full Republic of Ireland international, striker Grant Holt banged in the goals and played himself to the cusp of the England squad while goalkeeper John Ruddy did get a full England cap.

Big clubs took notice of his achievements, and having secured a mid-table finish in the top flight, an acrimonious exit to Aston Villa followed in 2012.

There aren't too many British players to have won the modern-day Champions League, let alone been a fulcrum of the side.

To have done it abroad, as a foreign player? Even rarer.

Paul Lambert did just that. Having emerged as a midfield schemer at St Mirren and Motherwell, German giants Borussia Dortmund took the Scotland international to the Westfalenstadion in 1996.

Once they'd decked him out in 'Schwarzgelb', he set about guiding them to Champions League glory. He dominated the Juventus midfielder Zinedine Zidane, helping Dortmund win the 1997 Champions League final and set up Karl-Heinz Riedle's opening goal.

He left after just over a year to carry out the same kind of duties at Celtic before finishing up at Livingston, but he'll never be forgotten in the Ruhr for that magical year.

The Playford Road media suite is packed this morning.

It's almost six years to the day since Mick McCarthy was appointed. I remember him saying six years ago that he'd had some big challenges in football and Ipswich was one of the biggest, and undoubtedly it's the same with Paul Lambert.

Ipswich Town. Say those two words and, depending on your age, a flurry of images streak through the mind.

'Sir Alf' and Ray Crawford back in 1962, winning the First Division championship having only just climbed out of Division Two.

Bobby Robson's smile in 1981, John Wark and Frans Thijssen's mega-taches, Eric Gates' toothy grin alongside the lanky Paul Mariner and the sillky Arnold Muhren threading yet another perfect pass.

Fast forward nearly 20 years, and it's Tony Mowbray's seemingly granite-hewn face beaming under the old Wembley twin towers as George Burley's side win promotion to the Premier League.

They've had some great times in Suffolk over the years. But the 'Punch hasn't been so proud of late.

Since Ipswich Town came down from the Premier League in 2002-03, there have been some tough times at Portman Road.

Joe Royle had some early success, getting the Tractor Boys into the Division One play-offs, but the higher points of the graph show that under Roy Keane and Paul Jewell, some of that momentum was lost.

Mick McCarthy took Ipswich into the top six in 2014-15, but the past three seasons have been less successful.

Ipswich Town have been fiercely loyal to their managers over the years. The Suffolk side have had only 16 full-time managers since 1936.

However, Paul Hurst's record just would not allow such loyalty to be afforded. No permanent manager has had fewer games at Portman Road.

There were mitigating circumstances behind his struggle, such as a £3m budget to work with against the cream of the Championship.

Hurst had done an excellent job at Shrewsbury and Grimsby. He took the former to the League One play-off final last season, having previously returned the latter to the Football League.

But one win, seven defeats and six draws from 14 league games was just not in keeping with the ambitions at Ipswich.

"I know it's going to be a big challenge, but it's one I can't wait to take on."

The words of former Ipswich boss Paul Hurst when he was appointed at Portman Road in May.

Sadly, as ready as Hurst felt he was it wasn't to work out and he was sacked last week after a 2-0 defeat by Leeds, with Ipswich bottom of the league.

So what next?

Well, in something of a surprise, the Blues appointed former Norwich and Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert on Friday.

Can he lead them to safety? How will Ipswich fans take to having a former Canaries boss in charge?
