Former defender Chris Gunter has been appointed Wales Under-19s head coach for the rest of the season.

The 36-year-old will lead the team at this summer's European Under-19 Championship, which will be hosted in north Wales.

Gunter returns to a role he has previously held, succeeding Craig Knight who has left to join Wrexham.

After winning 109 caps for Wales over the course of a 17-year playing career, the former Cardiff City, Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest and Reading full-back retired in 2023.

He has since worked with Wales' senior team as an assistant coach and led the country's Under-17s and Under-19s.

''I'm really pleased to be leading this group into the finals tournament," said Gunter.

"I've worked with a lot of the group before and knowing how good they can be gives me huge excitement."

Gunter will take charge of the Under-19s for matches in March as they prepare for the finals stage of the Euros in the summer.

He will also continue his role as head coach of the Under-17s, who face San Marino in April.

"Anytime you represent your country it's a huge honour, and to be doing that in a Euro finals is going to be special for everybody involved," he added.

"Hosting the tournament shows where Welsh football is at and the work that's gone into it. With the amazing support we will have in June, I cannot wait to see the players perform at the highest level.''
