Guernsey FC reignited their Southern Combination Premier title hopes after coming from a goal down to beat league leaders Haywards Heath Town 3-1 at Victoria Park.

The victory cut third-placed Guernsey's gap to their opponents to five points with 10 games to go.

The visitors took a 13th-minute lead when Thomas Chalaye reacted quickest after Charlie Meehan's shot was saved, but the hosts drew level two minutes later when Sam Murray headed home after Ross Allen's cross.

Guernsey's Brandon Wallace had an effort cleared off the line while Allen had a goal disallowed for offside after 25 minutes.

But record goalscorer Allen was not to be denied four minutes later when he pounced on a loose ball in the area to put the Green Lions 2-1 up.

Wallace almost made it 3-1 in first-half stoppage time, but he struck the post while Dave Merris saw a long-range effort saved seconds later.

But Guernsey fans did not have long to wait after half time for a third goal as Allen turned in Fin Patterson's 50th-minute cross.

Haywards Heath began to up the pressure - Josh Addison made two excellent saves in the final 15 minutes to help keep his side in the game as the Green Lions bounced back from their 4-0 loss at fourth-placed Horsham YM last week.

"I think first half we were really dominant," Guernsey FC manager Tony Vance told BBC Radio Guernsey.

"Obviously they scored a goal, and it was a cheap goal from us, probably a foul I thought, but we switched off from a throw-in and we were always vulnerable the way we play.

"But the flip side of that is the way we play we can really go at teams and wind them down, and that's what we did in the first half.

"I thought we were really dominant once they scored their goal and credit to the players, I thought they played the system and played exactly how we needed to and what we've been talking about and what we want.

"The way that performance was first half is exactly why we play like we do to get those performances, and the best thing about it is to do it against a top team like Haywards Heath who are first.

"It's easy to do it against the teams who are not so strong, but to do it against a team like that is fantastic and I thought that first half was outstanding."
