The Gayfield Park wind machine - which Dick Campbell would famously 'switch on' for the big games - is blowing like a hurricane once again.

Not since the days of Campbell - when the bunneted one took the Red Lichties on a journey that gave the denizens of Arbroath a golden glimpse of the promised land of the Scottish Premiership - have Arbroath been on this sort of ride.

Down at the seaside on the Angus coast, it is all the fun of the fair as the North Sea wind blasts in and nobody knows where this Championship ride is going to end.

The part-time side are enjoying defying the odds once again as they sit third in the table, seven points clear of Ayr United in fourth place.

Arbroath have only lost one of their last 12 matches in regulation time.

Indeed, that solitary defeat was at league leaders St Johnstone on 3 January and it only came about after an horrendous back-pass mistake that allowed in Adama Sidebeh to score the only goal of the match.

So much credit is due to co-managerial duo Colin Hamilton and David Gold - both of whom were trusted on-field lieutenants of Dick Campbell during the Arbroath glory run back in season 2021-22, when they pushed Kilmarnock all the way for the Championship title.

Both men were on the field during that dramatic night at Rugby Park when Kilmarnock finally snatched the vital victory with Blair Alston's last-minute goal in a match where Arbroath had taken the lead through James Craigen.

Since then, Hamilton and Gold have cut their teeth as a managerial duo in League 1 and have now taken the Championship by storm.

They have forged a team full of character and talent, exemplified by their recent 3-2 win over Raith Rovers.

After taking a 2-0 lead, Rovers pegged them back to make it 2-2.

But, rather than crumble, Arbroath regrouped and introduced Scott Robinson from the bench - a recent arrival from the wreckage of Hamilton Academical.

The former Hearts and Kilmarnock forward wasted no time in making an impact by grabbing the winner.

Next up for Arbroath, a home match against beleaguered Greenock Morton in front of the BBC Scotland cameras on Friday.

An air of fragile uncertainty surrounds the visitors.

Ian Murray watched from the stands as his new side lost a 2-0 lead to go down 3-2 away to Partick Thistle.

This was then followed up by the horror of losing 4-0 to lower league opposition in the Scottish Cup, albeit Stenhousemuir are riding high in League 1.

Morton clearly have faith in Ian Murray given his exploits as manager of Raith Rovers and have handed the former Hibs and Rangers player a contract until the summer of 2027.

However, with technical head coach Billy Davies having recently departed the club, Murray faces a big task steadying the ship.

An especially tough task on the notoriously stormy coastline that flanks Gayfield.

The away side are on a run of six matches without a win.

However, Morton can take heart from the fact they drew 1-1 here earlier this season and beat Arbroath 1-0 at Cappielow in November.
