Wycombe Wanderers striker Cauley Woodrow was relieved to end a goal drought stretching back almost three months by scoring in their 2-0 win over Wigan.

Woodrow, who is on loan from Luton Town, headed home after being introduced as a second-half substitute, having had a pre-match chat with boss Michael Duff.

It was his first goal since a double against Plymouth Argyle at the beginning of November and enabled Wycombe to bounce back positively from a 2-0 home defeat by Peterborough on Saturday.

"I hadn't scored for a while and he [Duff] was telling me to take the pressure off myself and not worry about it too much," Woodrow told BBC Three Counties Radio.

"At the weekend I missed a big chance which I was really disappointed with. I value myself on scoring goals and it's something I want to do here because I love it here."

Woodrow joined Luton from Barnsley in 2022, but has spent much of his time at Kenilworth Road sitting on the bench, with 59 of his 67 league appearances for The Hatters coming as a sub.

It was a similar story last season when he played 10 games during a loan spell at Blackburn Rovers, but only two of them from the start.

He has scored six goals in 24 appearances since arriving at Wycombe, but again found himself among the substitutes against Wigan, having been included in the starting eleven at the weekend.

"You want to play all the time," he said.

"I'm really happy [with the goal] and maybe that little chat the gaffer had with me before the game did help take the pressure off a little bit."

Woodrow added: "We were the better team but the game was on a knife edge, if they'd scored, the game can slip but we scored again to make it 2-0 which gave us that bit of breathing space."

The Chairboys are eighth in the table ahead of Saturday's game away to Mansfield Town, six points outside the play-off places.
