Ex-Newcastle striker Ranger leaves Wellingborough

Former Premier League striker Nile Ranger is again without a club after leaving Wellingborough Town at the end of a short-term deal.

The 34-year-old joined the Northern Premier League Division One Midlands club in October, and played his final game against Lichfield City on 17 January.

Ranger began the season at nearby Kettering Town but left the day after his 50th appearance for The Poppies, having scored 18 goals including the winner in an FA Cup tie against Northampton Town last season, televised by the BBC.

Wellingborough said on X: "We would like to put on record our thanks to Nile for his hard work and commitment on the pitch, as well as his engagement off the pitch, particularly with our youth section and young supporters.

"We wish him all the best in his future endeavours in and outside of football. He will always be welcome down the Dog & Duck in the future!"

In response, Ranger posted: "Had a great time. Great bunch. All the best lads."

The Newcastle United academy graduate scored 24 goals in 147 appearances in the top four tiers of English football earlier in his career.

He made 62 appearances for the Magpies but admitted last year to BBC Sport he had "messed up" his career with off-field controversies.

Ranger also plays for N5 FC in Baller League UK, a six-a-side format launched last year by influencers and former professional footballers.
