Paul Wotton could not contain his joy at his side's late win at Enfield Town

Torquay United boss Paul Wotton says a frank half-time team talk may have been the reason for his side's 2-1 win at struggling Enfield Town.

Sam Youngs had given the relegation-threatened hosts a 19th-minute lead in the National League South game that they took into the interval.

But Dylan Morgan equalised soon after the restart and Kieran Wilson scored an 88th-minute penalty to secure all three points for the Gulls.

"I just said that 'you're nowhere near it'," the Torquay manager said of his words at the interval.

"I said 'you've got to start playing like you're a team that's wanting to win the league', and that's it, I walked out, and it obviously upset them."

The victory moved the Gulls up to third in the table - level on points with second-placed Worthing and two points behind leaders Hornchurch, who have a game in hand.

"It's never going to be easy for Torquay United because every team wants to beat us," Wotton added to BBC Radio Devon.

"It's like teams get a bee in their bonnet about beating Torquay in this league, and that was a hard-fought game.

"I think Enfield went ahead against the run of play, but after that they had a good few chances and were probably the better team first half chances-wise.

"I didn't think it was a particularly good first half, I didn't think it was a particularly good second half, but we've got the three points.

"I think we deserved them in the end, we kept going, we kept trying, we kept working, we showed endeavour and we got a little break with the penalty and we scored it.

"So we take our three points, we get on the bus, we get home and we get ready for Tuesday night [at home to Farnborough]."
