Shrewsbury Town have signed Brentford goalkeeper Matthew Cox on loan for the rest of the season.

The 22-year-old England youth international spent time at the academies of Chelsea and AFC Wimbledon before joining the Bees in 2021.

Despite not yet featuring for Brentford's first team, Cox brings English Football League experience to Croud Meadow having had loan spells in League One with Bristol Rovers two seasons ago and at Crawley last term.

"Matt is someone we've been aware of for a while," Salop head coach Michael Appleton said., external

"He's got a great pedigree and a strong background in terms of footballing education.

"He's good with his feet, has impressive distribution and we're excited to bring him in.

"He is going to be able to challenge Will [Brook] for a place in the starting 11, which is healthy for both players and the squad."

Cox, Town's fourth signing of the transfer window, will fill the gap left by Elyh Harrison's return to parent club Manchester United.

Harrison had started the season as Town's number one goalkeeper but lost his place to Brook after six matches.

He returned to the side for Saturday's 6-1 defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third round of the FA Cup.
