Aston Villa Women 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur Women: Mana Iwabuchi scores Villa winner
- Published
Mana Iwabuchi's long-range goal gave Aston Villa victory over Tottenham Hotspur and their first home win in the Women's Super League this season.
The Japan international's curling shot from the right side of the box found the top left of the Spurs goal at Banks's Stadium in Walsall.
Alanna Kennedy had a chance to equalise for Spurs on the stroke of half-time but screwed her volley wide.
The match was the first in the WSL with the option of concussion substitutes.
Spurs keeper Aurora Mikalsen was fortunate to escape with a yellow card when she brought down Diana Silva on the edge of the box on the hour mark as the visitors were limited to long-range efforts against a resolute Villa.
Cho So-hyun did have a late chance for Spurs - in the 100th minute - but her first-time, left-foot shot from inside the box was just over.
The result moves Aston Villa move up to ninth, level with local rivals Birmingham City, while Spurs stay seventh.
