Manchester United 2-3 Manchester City: Blues edge rivals in Women's FA Cup fourth round

Ellen White's double helped holders Manchester City into the Women's FA Cup fifth round at the expense of local rivals Manchester United.

White finished coolly after being gifted possession by Abbie McManus to put City in front and then turned in Lauren Hemp's low cross to make it 2-0.

Lauren James drilled in a reply for United, who nearly equalised when McManus' shot was stopped on the line.

Jill Scott settled it in City's favour, despite Hemp's late own goal.

United felt they should have been level at 2-2, their players protesting vigorously to the officials that defender McManus' attempt from close range had crossed the line.

That, quickly followed by Scott's deflected effort from 20 yards, seemed to quash United's momentum, only for Hemp's unfortunate goal from a corner to bring the hosts back into it late on.

Before the dramatic finale, two smart finishes from White either side of the interval looked certain to secure a comfortable passage into the last 16 for City, but the intensity of the derby grew once teenage substitute James had beaten Ellie Roebuck with a low shot from the edge of the box.

The other 15 fourth-round ties will be played on Sunday, with the draw for round five on Monday.

Manchester City striker Ellen White told BBC Sport: "The most important thing is that we are in the hat for the next round, we made hard work of it but we are really pleased to be in the hat.

"We knew the second goal would be really important for us so I was delighted to get on the scoresheet again.

"It was a tough second half for us but we showed resilience and dug in deep."
