West Bromwich Albion ended their seven-game winless run by beating bottom club Luton Town to go back to the top of the Championship.

Luton's Donervon Daniels put through his own net after 14 minutes before Semi Ajayi's second goal in successive home games wrapped up the points in the second half.

James Collins thought he had equalised in the first half but was ruled offside and the Hatters had a penalty claim turned down when Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu was challenged in the box by Kyle Bartley.

Callum Robinson impressed on his Baggies debut after a deadline-day loan move from Sheffield United, setting up the opener with a ball in from the left.

Albion, who had been on a poor recent run, were largely restricted to long-range efforts.

Robinson tried his luck from distance only to find Luton goalkeeper Simon Sluga in fine form.

Luton twice came close to an equaliser in the second half when Mpanzu dallied in the box, then crossed for James Collins, who missed with a header.

But the Baggies wrapped up the game with 20 minutes left when Ajayi headed in Matt Phillips' cross.

The first league victory for Slaven Bilic's men since winning at Birmingham on 14 December lifted the Baggies above Leeds, who lost at home to Wigan.

Former Albion number two Graeme Jones' Hatters remain bottom, seven points adrift of 21st-place Stoke.

West Brom head coach Slaven Bilic:

"It was very important for us to get back on a winning track. We created a lot of chances and should have scored more goals."

"Callum Robinson was one of the players we really wanted to get in the summer but he wanted to play in the Premier League.

"He is a goal threat and exactly the sort of player we want, a player who can go into space without the ball."

Luton manager Graeme Jones:

"It doesn't help when you gift the first goal. As for the second, I know how explosive Matty Phillips can be - and we didn't deal with Ajayi.

"Mpanzu should have had a penalty, and then Callum McManaman had a great chance. You need to take those chances. But I'm measuring the improvement.

"I was pleased with certain aspects. We were competitive. We weren't overawed, I just need a little more from them at a place like West Brom."
