Tottenham fell further behind in the race for a top-four spot in the Premier League with a defeat at Southampton on Wednesday, with rivals Chelsea held to a draw at Brighton.

Spurs are six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea after striker Danny Ings scored Southampton's winner in the 17th minute at St Mary's.

Fifth-placed Manchester United also missed the chance to narrow the gap on fourth when they were beaten 2-0 at Arsenal. They are five points behind Chelsea after first-half goals from Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis Papastathopoulos earned Mikel Arteta a first win as Arsenal boss, with the three points moving the Gunners up to 10th.

Earlier on Wednesday, Alireza Jahanbakhsh's spectacular overhead kick gave Brighton a point late on in their 1-1 draw with Chelsea after Cesar Azpilicueta had fired in the opener from close range.

Second-placed Leicester City kicked off the new year with a comfortable 3-0 win over Newcastle at St James' Park thanks to superb goals from Ayoze Perez, James Maddison and substitute Hamza Choudhury.

Defending champions Manchester City, now a point behind Leicester, moved within 11 points of leaders Liverpool with a 2-1 win over Everton. Gabriel Jesus scored two goals in seven minutes after Phil Foden had a goal ruled out for offside. Richarlison got one back for Everton in the 71st minute.

Bottom-of-the-table Norwich City were denied a crucial three points when Crystal Palace forward Connor Wickham cancelled out Todd Cantwell's fourth-minute opener to make it 1-1 following a video assistant referee review, slotting in Wilfried Zaha's cross in the 85th minute.

In David Moyes' first match of his second spell as manager at London Stadium, West Ham thrashed Bournemouth 4-0 - Mark Noble scoring twice in the first half, either side of a goal from Sebastien Haller, before Felipe Anderson added a fourth in the 66th minute.

Meanwhile, Watford held on to secure a 2-1 win over Wolves despite going down to 10 men in the 71st minute when Christian Kabasele was shown a straight red card for a foul on Diogo Jota.

Pedro Neto got a goal back for Wolves on the hour but it was not enough after Abdoulaye Doucoure and Gerard Deulofeu had given Watford a 2-0 lead.

Aston Villa moved out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 victory against Burnley thanks to goals from Wesley and Jack Grealish, although VAR was at the heart of it again, ruling out a goal for the visitors in the first half for a marginal offside.
