Bristol City 5-2 Huddersfield Town: Hosts go fifth with comfortable win over Terriers

Huddersfield boss Danny Cowley believes his struggling side lacked "good men" after they were hammered by Championship play-off hopefuls Bristol City.

The hosts took an early lead when Josh Brownhill turned in Andreas Weimann's effort at goal before Terriers defender Terence Kongolo put through his own net under pressure from Nathan Baker.

Karlan Grant got the visitors back in it with a fine finish, but Niclas Eliasson restored the hosts' two-goal cushion just 67 seconds later with a powerful effort and Ashley Williams headed in an Eliasson corner to make it 4-1 at half-time.

Weimann finished calmly after being played in behind the visitors' defence before Juninho Bacuna notched a Huddersfield consolation from 20 yards.

"I thought it went beyond football, it's about good men," Cowley told BBC Radio Leeds.

"I have been involved in some successful teams that have had good men, and we were well short of them today."

He added: "I actually felt ashamed when I went over to applaud our fans at the end.

"We are pampered and flew down yesterday when they were working to earn the money to come and watch us.

"Now they face a long journey home and I feel for them because they stuck behind the players throughout the game and were a credit to our club."

Huddersfield are winless in four and just two points above the relegation zone ahead of next week's clash with table-topping local rivals Leeds.

"There is a lot of things wrong, there is no hiding place from that," said Cowley when asked if changes were needed.

"People make dressing rooms, people make football clubs and you need good men, and we didn't have enough good men today.

"I'm not into public hangings, I don't think that's the right way to go about things, I don't think that's going to help the football club, certainly not in the short term, but if you were here today, you would know."

The win took City up to fifth and was the perfect response from Lee Johnson's men after their midweek 4-1 defeat at promotion-chasing West Brom.

Johnson made five changes from the team who started the game at The Hawthorns, including just a fourth start of the season for winger Eliasson.

The former Sweden Under-21 international enjoyed a brilliant afternoon, with a goal and two assists in the first half.

City will be looking to secure back-to-back wins for the first time since August when they travel to third-placed Fulham.

Bristol City boss Lee Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol:

"The boys were fantastic. It has been a tough week for us for a number of reasons and I thought we were outstanding to a man.

"We were very bright and a lot of stuff we've been working on really came to fruition today.

"Niclas doesn't get in to the back post often enough so for him to get in the box like that and score will be one he will enjoy for sure.

"We felt a result like this was coming so that was why the West Brom result was so disappointing. To have the moment of quality and sheer brilliance we had was very pleasing.

"We've got to keep going now. If we get a punch on the nose we've got to learn our lessons, as we did on Wednesday, and bounce back really quickly."
