Josh Scowen's first-half goal was just his second this season
Matt Smith's stunning injury-time volley earned QPR victory over Sheffield Wednesday on the final day of the Championship season.
Josh Scowen's shot put the Londoners ahead at the interval, the midfielder getting involved in the build-up and then finding the net from Darnell Furlong's right-wing cross.
Fernando Forestieri then blasted a second-half penalty over the bar for the Owls, while QPR also missed from the spot when Ebere Eze's 80th-minute penalty was saved by Owls keeper Keiren Westwood.
But the hosts did level from the third spot-kick of the game with six minutes remaining.
This time Michael Hector took the responsibility, after Ryan Manning fouled Marco Matias, and the defender found the net.
But Smith won the points in the 93rd minute after good work by Massimo Luongo.
Steve Bruce's Owls finish the season in 12th place, while QPR end in 19th, under caretaker boss John Eustace, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Steve Bruce:
"It was a lacklustre, end-of-season game, a bit like a friendly. And, when you don't get the basics right, you get punished.
"Overall they've done very well, but it's been taken away from us. We've had an OK three months and now we have a big summer ahead of us.
"We have four loans and eight or nine out of contract. There's big scope here but we need some fresh faces.
"We want to keep Kieran Lee here, I can confirm that. With a good pre-season under his belt, let's see if we can get him back to the player we know he is."
QPR caretaker manager John Eustace:
"The attitude of the players has been different class. They've stuck to the game plans and done everything I've asked them to do. It's been a really enjoyable year, especially the last four or five weeks.
"We were in trouble and heading for the bottom three. But they've got the right attitude and they're all willing to learn. The future is bright. It's great to finish with a win, especially for the fans.
"Since I've come in seven games ago, it's been the same story - we haven't taken the chances.
"We've had some positive performances without putting the ball in the back of the net. That makes a big difference."
