Jamille Matt's late equaliser was his 20th goal of the season

Newport County snatched the final League Two play-off spot thanks to a late equaliser from Jamille Matt.

Former Newport academy graduate Aaron Collins had looked set to break hearts at his former club when he gave the hosts a first-half lead.

The Exiles struggled to produce their best form but did come close through striker Padraig Amond, as Morecambe missed several chances to make it 2-0.

But Matt's 87th-minute goal saw Newport claim the point they required.

Exeter's failure to beat Forest Green means County finish the season seventh and will face Mansfield Town in the play-offs.

Newport County boss Michael Flynn told BBC Sport Wales:

"I am feeling a lot better than I was earlier because we were outplayed today, Morecambe had a lot of chances and for whatever reason we were not at it at all.

"So to get that goal at the end, it says everything about the boys and their 'never say die' attitude,

"They kept going and because of that they have got their just rewards and we have made it to the play-offs.

"We huffed and puffed... we were not at it in the final third or at the back. But we kept going and it was an agonising wait to find out if the draw was enough.

"If I am being honest I felt sick all the way through the game, my nerves were terrible."
