Southend United 3-2 Burton Albion

  • Published

Southend United boosted their League One survival hopes with a vital victory against Burton Albion at Roots Hall.

Goals from Sam Mantom, Harry Bunn and Timothee Dieng saw the Shrimpers secure their first win since January.

Southend opened the scoring with a well-worked goal when a superb right-wing cross from Simon Cox was fired home by Mantom.

The Shrimpers doubled their lead in the 48th minute when Bunn converted another cross from Cox.

Burton hit back on the hour mark with John Brayford volleying home Reece Hutchinson's deep left-wing cross.

However, Southend restored a two-goal cushion as Dieng headed home fellow substitute Michael Kightly's free-kick from the right.

The Brewers replied four minutes from time with Marcus Harness netting a well-taken left-footed shot, but Southend held on to end a run of 15 games without a victory.
