Stoke City frustrated Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road as both sides finished with 10 men in the Championship.

Stoke were depleted after only eight minutes when referee Gavin Ward showed Sam Clucas a straight red card for a stamp on Josh Scowen.

Nakhi Wells had the best chance to open the scoring for Rangers, forcing goalkeeper Jack Butland into a fine save from a tight angle after the break.

QPR defender Grant Hall was sent off with three minutes remaining following a second yellow card as the points were shared.

The hosts had taken just three points from a possible 27 in the Championship going into the game, but they were given a big advantage following Clucas' dismissal in the opening quarter.

Rangers midfielders Massimo Lungo and Luke Freeman both saw shots well saved by Butland midway through the first half as Steve McClaren's side pushed for the opener.

Charlie Adam had Stoke's best chance of the first half, striking a long-range effort which sailed wide of Joe Lumley's net.

But the Potters, who were winless in their last 20 league visits to London since a 2-1 victory at Spurs in November 2014, rarely threatened.

QPR's Bright Osayi-Samuel saw his shot curl narrowly over after 63 minutes and forward Tomer Hemed had a header easily saved by Butland with 10 minutes remaining.

Following Hall's second yellow card for a foul on Stoke's Tom Ince, both sides seemed happy to settle for a draw.

The result meant the hosts remain in 18th with 43 points, while Stoke stay two points above them in 16th.

QPR boss Steve McClaren:

"Obviously we're frustrated. That's the overall feeling in the dressing room, the dugout and also among the fans.

"But I can't fault the players. We tried as much as possible to win the game and the attitude was there to win it.

"We finished the game with two wingers, two strikers, Luke Freeman in midfield - so we went for it. We just didn't have that quality."

Stoke City manager Nathan Jones told BBC Radio Stoke:

"I thought our performance was full of character, work rate and discipline. I'm proud of the players today, that's how successful teams are made, they have that backbone and we showed that backbone today.

"We could have had more of a cutting edge but that was taken away from us with that early red card.

"I was bitterly disappointed. It was just a lack of discipline that cost us. We would have liked to have won here, but you have to adapt and we showed that we are adaptable today."
