Cheltenham Town 1-0 Port Vale

Luke Varney's 10th League Two goal of the season secured a 1-0 home win for Cheltenham Town against Port Vale.

The veteran front man struck in the 34th minute, reaching a low corner from Chris Hussey on the right and finding the bottom-right corner.

It was enough to secure Cheltenham's fourth home win in succession and take them further clear of the League Two relegation zone.

Varney had earlier been denied by a superb save from former Cheltenham goalkeeper Scott Brown, who dived low to his right to keep out a downward header.

David Worrall had the ball in the net for Vale after a cross from Cristian Montano, but referee Peter Wright had spotted a foul in the box and it was ruled out.

The away side were also close to levelling during first-half stoppage-time when Montano's header flashed just past the far post after a cross from Ben Whitfield.

Varney volleyed Hussey's free-kick delivery over the bar from a good position in the 57th minute as Cheltenham looked for a second, with Vale creating very little as they slipped closer to the drop zone.
