Last season's League One winners Wigan got the new campaign off to a positive start with a narrow victory over Sheffield Wednesday.
Michael Jacobs gave the hosts the lead after a bright run from debutant Antonee Robinson before the Owls equalised through Atdhe Nuhiu's close range shot.
Jacobs restored Wigan's lead with a neat finish and Nick Powell added a third after the break when Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson could only parry another Jacobs effort.
Fernando Forestieri gave the visitors hope before Nuhiu was sent off late on for a poor challenge on Latics debutant Cedric Kipre.
Despite being a man light the Owls came close to grabbing an injury-time leveller but home keeper Christian Walton got down well to deny striker Steven Fletcher.
Wigan scored 89 goals as they won the League One title last season and they needed just 11 minutes to break the deadlock at the DW Stadium.
It was a bright opening day for the Latics and midfielder Jacobs in particular. The former Wolves man had not scored twice in a single league game since 2014 and could have had a hat-trick before the break had he not been denied by the crossbar.
Unlike the hosts, who named four debutants, Wednesday have not made a single summer signing and they could now rue Nuhiu's late piece of ill-discipline which leaves him facing a ban.
Wigan manager Paul Cook: "It was just a great advert for football wasn't it?
"Probably the sending-off tainted it a little bit at the end, but the game was played in a very good spirit.
"It had everything you'd want when you go to a football match...goals, entertainment, hitting the woodwork, goals disallowed."
Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay: "I was surprised with the lack of stability we had in our defending.
"We've had so much progression over the last few months since the end of last season, and today we gave so many chances away.
"This is not what we can do. We have to be much better and we have to get better very quickly."
