A goal in either half from Northern Ireland striker Will Grigg gave second-placed Wigan Athletic a comfortable victory over Walsall.
The Latics were always on top of a rather scrappy encounter at the DW Stadium, and deserved the points.
Grigg opened the scoring with a deadly finish after Nick Powell and Walsall goalkeeper Mark Gillespie had collided while going for Callum Elder's cross.
And Powell was also involved in the second goal when his sublime through ball released Grigg who was in the act of pulling the trigger when cleaned out by James Wilson.
Grigg picked himself up and smashed home the penalty past Liam Roberts, who had replaced Gillespie at half-time.
Wigan could and should have added further goals in the last half-hour, with Powell seeing an effort hacked off the line.
Walsall almost pulled one back at the death, only for Jamie Jones to produce a fine save to deny Amadou Bakayoko.
