Mark Halstead: Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper signs new one-year contract

Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Mark Halstead is keen to establish himself as the League One club's first choice after signing a new one-year contract.

Since signing in the summer of 2014, Halstead has been limited to 21 appearances in two seasons, mostly as deputy to Jayson Leutwiler.

But Halstead, 25, says: "I'm at the age now where I need to be playing games.

"There's no bitterness between me and Jayson, it's a friendly rivalry, but ultimately it's my career."

He added: "Whether it's an injury, suspension, drop in form, I'm determined to take that chance and make the number one shirt my own."

Halstead, who joined the Town from Blackpool two years ago, has previously had loan spells in non-league with Barrow, Kettering and Stockport.

He follows the lead of defender Junior Brown and former England youth goalkeeper Callum Burton in signing new deals following a summer which has seen nine new signings and 10 players depart.

Shrewsbury start the season at the Greenhous Meadow on Saturday at home to relegated MK Dons.
