Teddy Sheringham replaced Graham Westley as Stevenage manager
Former England international Teddy Sheringham earned his first win as a manager as Stevenage ended Hartlepool's 100 per cent start to the season.
The hosts took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Fraser Franks headed in Steven Schumacher's corner.
Pools pressed for an equaliser and Rhys Oates got in on goal but his touch was heavy, Mark Hughes clearing off the line with 15 minutes remaining.
Striker Brett Williams ensured victory with a neat finish from a long ball.
Stevenage manager Teddy Sheringham told BBC Three Counties Radio:
Sheringham on Stevenage v Hartlepool
"I was delighted we ground out a result. The goal came at the perfect time for us. The crowd were getting restless and the players were getting restless.
"I know as a striker what it's like to get off the mark, so I was delighted for Brett Williams.
"But we can be so much better and I will be striving for us to improve."
