Jack Baldwin's goal and two for Luke James secured Hartlepool's path into the second round of the FA Cup and meant Shaun Derry's management career at Notts County started with a defeat.
Hartlepool took the lead when Baldwin headed in Simon Walton's free-kick.
Matty Dolan's clearance then crashed off Dean Leacock as Notts levelled before James reacted quickest after keeper Bart Bialkowski spilled a shot.
James tapped home for 3-1 while Ronan Murray crashed in from close range.
